Anaesthesia

General anaesthesia, administered by and in the offices of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their anaesthesia teams, has been an integral part of practice for more than 50 years.

Our aim is to keep you as pain free and comfortable as possible during and after your procedure.

The anaesthetic options are tailored to your particular problem and also your needs as an individual.

In general all cases can be performed either by LA (Local Anaesthetic) ,IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation) or GA (General Anaesthetic).

Anaesthesia

Local Anaesthetic

LA-involves nerve blocks and infiltration of Local Anaesthetic Drugs to obtain numbness in the area of surgery. It can be suitable for biopsies, some extractions, some surgical extractions, skin cancer surgery and even minor trauma.Patients can drive after LA and generally do not need to fast pre op.

IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation)

IV Sedation-involves drugs administered intravenously and LA injections as well. There is a change of consciousness associated and can be used for much more difficult cases. However you will need to fast 6 hours prior to the procedure and also  you will not be able to drive for 24 hours post surgery. Therefore you will need a driver to pick you up from the surgery and stay with you for the recovery period. Our Surgery utilises a Specialist Anaesthetist to provide safe sedation so we can concentrate to provide the best surgical outcome.

Important!

Hospital or Day Surgery

GA-is undertaken in a hospital or Day Surgery and again very useful for more complex procedure. Again you will need to fast for 6 hours pre operatively and have a driver since you cannot drive for 24 hours post op!!!
